Symptoms of the problem:

Steps to send exe and other files through Email

There are occasions when we wish to send to our friend some cool software or any application via email but the email scanners don’t allow us to do that.

This is right on one part to disallow anyone to send virus which are exe files through email but it is of no use to people who have no intention of sending the viruses through the mail.

So here are the steps if you wish to send the executable files through the email like Gmail.

Steps:

1. The best way to do that use online file storage like Rapidshare or MegaUpload and send the link to the friend.

2. Or you can try just renaming the file extension from exe to some other like jpg, doc or txt and ask your friend on other side to rename it back to the exe. This will fool the email scanner and the file can be sent.

To rename just go to the folder options -> view tab -> uncheck the option of Hide extensions, this will display the file extensions so that you can easily rename the files.

3. You can also compress the exe files into a zip or rar archive and rename the archive from zip or rar to some other (Note: Gmail scanner can scan the zip archive as well, so renaming zip to other extension is necessary).

P.S.: sending exe files even while renaming violates the mail policies.

Send Huge Files over Internet

It feels very bad when we want our friend to send us some song or a movie clip through email over internet because the emails like Gmail or Yahoo have some restrictions on the size of the data that we can send.

So what are you going to do if you are required to send some important data of about 500 MB in size? Well there are few ways to achieve that.

Either you can use online storages like Rapidshare and Windows Skydrive or just email the files using some other mail clients like YouSendIt.
Solution:

1. Online storage that provides huge storages like Skydrive, MegaUpload etc are great way to share files.

2. But if you wish to send file physically then use the mail services like YouSendIt and Pando
.

Pando is a free personal peer-to-peer software that allows sending, receiving and publishing large files. It works with both Macintosh and Windows operating systems. The free versions of these services allow us to send files of around 1 or 2 GBs.

There are many other ways to send files which you can share with us.

Steps to Protect exe Files from Viruses

Anti Virus is a great protection tool to safeguard our computer and files against the virus but these are not 100% efficient in use and also they require periodic updating of the virus definitions.

Here is a free, simple yet powerful tool that can protect your files and folders especially the executable exe files against the viruses. The tool is called PE Guard and keeps running in the background in the system tray without consuming much of the memory space.

The tool can be chosen to run in wither normal Guard mode or the Power Guard mode. As the name suggests, Power Guard mode is more powerful and protects the computer and files better. It can detect and thus protect when the virus is trying to replicate itself in the system and when it is trying to infect the system exe or sys files.

The tool is free and what’s more it do not require any update of the definitions like the Anti Virus software.

Disable Autorun.inf Creation in USB Pen Drives

Autorun.inf is the popular file created by the viruses in the USB Flash drives which is used by them to spread across different storage media.

It is the first file that gets created in the pen drives as soon as the drive is inserted in the system having viruses. Thus it is for sure that if you prevent the creation of this file in the USB drives then the virus will not spread on its own.

Now to achieve this task here is a tool developed by OPS called Autorun Spreading Breaker. This tool helps to protect our external drives from the autorun file and thereby prevents computer to computer spread of the viruses.

The tool is free and is easy to use.

Microsoft. NET Remoting

Scott McLean,James Naftel,Kim Williams,"Microsoft. NET Remoting"

Publisher: Microsoft Press ISBN-10: 0735617783 edition October 25, 2002 CHM 300
pages 1.2 mb

This title shows developers how to build Internet-based, distributed applications using Microsoft .NET Remoting, which enables powerful remote interaction among objects. A fundamental understanding of .NET Remoting is crucial as developers shift to developing distributed, Internet-based applications. Until recently, DCOM was the preferred method for developing distributed applications on Microsoft platforms. But as this book demonstrates, the .NET Remoting architecture is much easier to use and extend than DCOM. The book covers all aspects of .NET Remoting, including in-depth coverage of the .NET Remoting architecture plus concrete examples, best practices, and performance tips to show how to extend and customize the framework.

What is WinSxS Folder and How to clean it?

This was the query of one of our readers who wanted to know about this folder in Windows 7 called WinSxS. The folder contains thousands of files and occupies Gigabytes of space.

Info about this folder

The folder called WinSxS stands for Windows Side-by-Side and is used to store versions of Windows components that are built to reduce configuration problems with Dynamic Link Libraries (DLL Hell). Multiple versions of components are stored in this folder.

In short this folder usually does not contain any useful data contents of which may be deleted to reclaim the occupied huge space.

However cleaning this is not easy if the folder does not get clean up by executing a disk cleanup then you might have to format the system to get the used space.

System Restore Missing in Windows

One of our readers faced this problem that he was not able to find the System Restore option in his version of Windows. If similar is the case with you then here are few tricks to solve the problem.

Solution 1:

The problem of missing System Restore is due to the corrupted or missing System Volume Information folders in each drive.

1. Go to each drive and look for these folders (these are system hidden and you will need to show hidden as well as system files to see these folders).

2. Rename the folder to something else like System Volume Info and restart the computer.

3. Delete these folders and restart the system again.

4. The new folders would have created by default and the System Restore would get restored.

Solution 2:

1. Type regedit in the Run box to open the registry editor.

2. Navigate to this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore

3. If a “DisableSR” value doesn’t exist, go to the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value, and create the value. Set the value to 1 to disable System Restore or 0 to enable System Restore.

4. Restart may be required.

Free Task Manager Replacement Tools

In a virus infected system, it is a common sight that our Task Manager is disabled and thus we are not able to see the processes running in our system.

Well there are ways to solve the problem but in case you are not able to solve the problem then just use the Task Manager Replacement tools.

1. Process Explorer

This is a free and good task manager alternative that can serve you better than the task manager itself.

2.Anvir

Other good and free alternative for Task Manager.

3. DTaskManager

This one is a better task manager than the default Windows’ one, if not equal since it provides more functionality than the default one.

If you know other alternatives as well then leave a comment below.

Multi Windows Live Messenger 2009

So far until Windows Live Messenger 2009, all versions of MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger (WLM) does not support running multiple instances of the program. It means that at any one time, only one Windows Live Messenger program is allowed to be launched, effectively restricts WLM users to login to just not more than 1 account at one time.

In Windows Live Messenger 2009 (current version installable through Windows Live Essentials), Microsoft has added support for running multiple instances of Windows Live Messenger, allowing user to sign in to multi-login and log on to multiple accounts. The helper external third party programs such as MultiLive or MultiMSN no longer required.

The support for multi-WLM is not enabled by default, but can be easily turned on and enable with registry hack.

1. Run Registry Editor (regedit).

2. Navigate to the following registry key:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live\Messenge

For 64-bit (x64) OS, go to following registry branch instead:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Live\Messenger

3. In the right pane, right click on any blank space, select New on context menu, and then click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.

4. Name the new registry value entry as MultipleInstances.

5. Modify the MultipleInstances and set its value data as 1.

6. Start as many Windows Live Messenger windows as you want from Start Menu.

Note that you need a different Windows Live account (MSN Passport user name) and password in order to run two or more instances of Windows Live Messenger. If you have set automatically login upon running WLMessenger, an error may pop up when additional instance is run if your login is still signed in when new instance opening. Just change to your second WL Messenger login
